Old Forge, New York is the snowmobile capital of the east! Old Forge Camping Resort and Water’s Edge Inn have direct access to the groomed snowmobile trails and offer a discount for all NYSSA members. Old Forge’s proximity to the Tug Hill Plateau, which regularly accumulates 300 inches of snow per year, makes the Old Forge region a sure bet for good trail conditions. In the greater Old Forge area, there are more than 500 miles of trails, and many town streets are open to snowmobiles.

In the outskirts of Old Forge is McCauley Mountain Ski Area offering twenty-one slopes and trails up to a mile long, a double chairlift, two T-Bar lifts, and rope tows. In addition to the annual natural snowfall of nearly 300 inches, McCauley has snowmaking and exceptional grooming to ensure the best conditions. The most serious thrill-seeking skier shouldn’t let the 633-foot vertical drop deter them because there are challenging double-black diamond slopes to conquer. Cross Country enthusiasts can enjoy up to 10k of groomed trails.

The Wild Center in nearby Tupper Lake offers winter family fun and as an added bonus; each guest receives free snowshoes in the winter! USA Today called it the place “not to miss.” From live river otters swimming in their own waterfall to stunning high definition films, snowshoe trails, and a warm cafe, The Wild Center is an indoor and outdoor winter attraction. The Wall Street Journal called The Wild Center “glorious” and The New York Times called it “stunning”. The Wild Center is open all winter on Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays.

There are a couple of outdoor skating rinks in the area; Old Forge Outdoor Ice-Skating Rink on Joy Tract Road and Fern Park Outdoor Ice Skating Rink on Loomis Road in Inlet. The best way to discover a few favorite sledding sites in Old Forge is to inquire at the Town of Webb Information Center.
